    Coordinate systems in Oman: quick reference

    Surveying in Oman grew out of the petroleum sector: the Fahud datum (EPSG:4232) — named after the origin station at the Fahud oil field — underpinned Petroleum Development Oman mapping, and was superseded by PSD93 (EPSG:4134), the “Petroleum Survey Datum 1993” that became the de-facto standard for oil sheets and projects, used with UTM zones (e.g. EPSG:3440 for zone 40 covering Muscat).

    More recently the Sultanate adopted a national frame tied to the global reference frames: ONGD14 (EPSG:7373) and then ONGD17 (EPSG:9294) for new geodetic work. The country spans three UTM zones, 39 to 41 — Muscat sits in zone 40, Dhofar in the west touches 39, and the eastern offshore areas reach 41.
