Coordinate systems in Syria: quick reference
National surveying in Syria rests on a single, well-established datum: Deir ez Zor (EPSG:4227), laid down in the 1920s during the French mandate as part of a unified survey that covered the Levant. The datum takes its name from an origin station near Deir ez Zor in the east, and it still underpins Syria's topographic and cadastral sheets today.
On top of this datum sits the Deir ez Zor / Syria Lambert projection (EPSG:22770), a Lambert Conformal Conic grid that covers the whole of Syria with one coordinate grid instead of splitting the country across UTM zones. A Lambert conic suits a country that extends more east–west than north–south, and it preserves shapes and angles for precise survey work.
