    FAQ

    What is the difference between geodesic and grid distance?
    The geodesic distance is the shortest distance on the WGS 84 ellipsoid and is the most accurate for long lines. The grid distance is measured on the projected metric plane (e.g. UTM) and differs from the geodesic by the scale factor. We show both when a projected system is selected.
    Why is the forward azimuth different from the back azimuth?
    On an oblate ellipsoid a geodesic is not a straight line in the planar sense, so its direction changes along the line. The azimuth from point 1 to 2 is therefore not exactly the reverse of the azimuth from 2 to 1 — the difference grows with distance and latitude change.
    Why does this differ from the Google Maps ruler?
    Ruler tools in some apps use a planar projection (Web Mercator) that distorts distance, especially far from the equator. Our calculator computes the true distance on the ellipsoid with Karney’s algorithm (the same engine PROJ uses).
    Are my coordinates uploaded?
    No; all computation is in your browser. We only record an anonymous tally of the line’s midpoint after you consent to tracking.
