About the Oblique Stereographic family
Deir ez Zor / Levant Stereographic uses the Oblique Stereographic projection — an azimuthal, conformal grid centred on a single origin point, historically used for compact national grids such as the Levant. It preserves angles and is well behaved near its centre.
As with any projected grid, confirm the datum and origin before importing; scale grows with distance from the central point, so reduce long ground distances to grid for precise work.

FAQ
- What is EPSG:22780?
- It is the coordinate system “Deir ez Zor / Levant Stereographic”, a Projected (metres) system in the Oblique Stereographic family, identified worldwide by the code EPSG:22780.
- What datum does it use, and how accurate is it?
- It is based on the clrk80ign ellipsoid and it carries Helmert parameters to WGS84. The residual at the test point is about ±0.1 m versus PROJ; for centimetre work use a geodetic adjustment service.
- Where is this system used?
- It is used in Lebanon, Syria. This page shows its area of use as a coordinate rectangle above.
- How do I convert EPSG:22780 to WGS84?
- Use the free coordinate converter above (preloaded with this system) to convert to WGS84, UTM, or any other system, within a ±0.1 m residual.
