    Coordinate systems in Egypt: quick reference

    Egypt historically works on the Egypt 1907 datum (EPSG:4229) with a Transverse Mercator split into belts: the Red Belt (EPSG:22992) for the centre and Nile Valley on central meridian 31°E, the Blue Belt (EPSG:22991) for the east and Sinai at 35°E, the Purple Belt (EPSG:22993) for the west at 27°E, and the Extended Purple Belt (EPSG:22994) for the far south-west. Alongside them sits the Egypt 1930 datum (EPSG:4199) used on other map series.

    The costliest site error is mixing datums: a GPS point observed on WGS84 and plotted on a legacy belt sheet without the shift lands about 130 m off in Egypt. The tool applies the published shift (EPSG::1148) automatically both ways and warns when the point falls outside the system’s area of use.

    Why does GPS disagree with an old sheet by about 130 m?
