    Iraq’s best-known national datum is Karbala 1979 — the basis of cadastral and municipal work — used either geographically (EPSG:4743), through the Iraq National Grid (EPSG:6646), or via UTM zones 37 to 39 (e.g. EPSG:3392 for Baghdad’s zone 38). Before it, the Nahrwan 1934 datum (EPSG:4744) with the Lambert conic “Iraq zone” projection (EPSG:3394) underpinned mapping across Iraq and the wider region.

    More recently Iraq adopted the IGRS frame (EPSG:3889), tied to the global reference frames, for new GNSS work. An older ED50-based edition of the national grid (EPSG:3893) also circulates, carrying only ballpark accuracy of several metres — the tool surfaces an honest accuracy badge for every system.
