The dunum across the Levant and Iraq

The dunum is an Ottoman-era unit that remained the land language of the Mashreq even as its value varied by region. Today it has settled on two main values: the metric dunum = 1,000 m² used in Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria (so 10 dunums = 1 hectare), and the Iraqi dunum = 2,500 m² used in Iraqi land-registry records, dividing into 25 olk (1 olk = 100 m²).

Mixing the two upends any deal's arithmetic: a "10-dunum" parcel in Amman means 10,000 m², while in Baghdad it means 25,000 m² — a 2.5× difference. The historical Ottoman dunum carried several provincial values, which is why we leave it to historical context rather than model it as a unit. Always confirm which country the deed was issued in before converting.
